Since it was established in 1988, the Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra (hereinafter 'Bucheon Phil') has been highly recognized by classical music lovers for its concerts of fresh programs and repertory. Since Professor Hun-Joung Lim of Seoul National University was appointed as Permanent Conductor, it has grown into the Korea's leading orchestra, and can perform on domestic and international stages with exceptional individual skills and rich repertories.
The Bucheon Phil began to gain its reputation when the 2nd Symphonic Festival was held in 1990, and it gave a sensational performance that far exceeded the expectations of audience members and the musical community. Since then, the Bucheon Phil has staged 20th century works that include the works of Schoenberg and Bartok, and presented full-length performance of the works of Brahms and Beethoven, creating a sensation in the Korean musical community for its passion and creativity. In addition, it confirmed its position as a world-class orchestra when it gave a great performance at the 1st Asia Orchestra Week 2002, representing Korea .Asia Orchestra Week 2002 was held in Japan in September 2002, and Japanese music lovers and press highly praised the performance by the Phil, saying 'It was flawless...The pace was perfect, and the tension was maintained,' and 'It was the best Symphonie Fantastique ever.' The Phil was invited by Kawasaki in 2006, and gave a touching performance for Japanese audiences at the Kawasaki Concert Hall.
Bucheon Phil is particularly well known for its full-length performance of the Symphonies of Mahler. The successful staging of a full performance of the Symphonies of Mahler, from 1999 to 2003, is considered a milestone in the musical history of Korea. It was not just a first in Korea, but a perfect reproduction of the musical world of Mahler. The performance led to the organization of a Mahlerlovers' club, and created a Mahler craze among the public. This in turn drove remarkable changes in the repertories of domestic philharmonic orchestras, and changed the map of concert music in Korea. The untiring efforts and excellent work of the Phil have earned it the strong support of domestic music lovers, and in 2005 it became the first musical organization to win the Hoam Prize, theso-called Nobel Prize of Korea. Since then, it has fortified its position as the nation's leading orchestra. The Phil has staged full-length performances of the Symphonies of Mahler titled 'Mahler in Bucheon' again since 2005, and these performances will be continued until the exclusive concert hall is completed in Bucheon.
The challenges of the Bucheon Phil will not stop in 2012.
