The Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra Chorus is a top domestic choir that has developed rapidly in a short period of time, growing along with senior conductor and artistic director Byeong-Cheol Choi since its foundation in 1988. The Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra Chorus is known as a choir that strives for natural vocalization and texture-sensitive sounds, based on the outstanding skills of the chorus members. Through six regular concerts every year, the chorus has risen to distinction by consistently presenting the highest level of choral music, ranging from operas, various creative songs, ancient songs, hymns, oratorios, and masses. In addition, it provides numerous concerts that bring it closer to the community, by holding performances in culturally isolated areas within the Bucheon area, as well as Christmas concerts with local church choirs. Through these efforts, it has become a civic organization that breathes along with the citizens of Bucheon.
The Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra Chorus is famous as a leading domestic opera choir, with its full volume and remarkable expressiveness, and is appearing in two operas each year. The Philharmonic Orchestra Chorus has been an outstanding opera choir for numerous operatic works, including Johann Strauss¡¯s ¡°The Bat¡±, Mozart¡¯s ¡°The Magic Flute¡±, Verdi¡¯s ¡°La Traviata¡± and ¡°Un Ballo In Maschera¡±, Puccini¡¯s ¡°La Boheme¡±, and Donizetti¡¯s ¡°Lelisir Damore¡±. Some outstanding choir members are active as primary or secondary performers in operas.
The Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra Chorus recruited Professor Sang-Hun Lee from Sungkyul University, who has studied conducting in Germany, as its 2nd senior conductor in 1999. This has brought the chorus into a new musical era, launched with its staging of ¡°The Merry Widow¡± from 2003 to 2004. While boldly producing concerts that present audiences with diverse musical worlds, it is receiving a great response from people for its innovative programming, which has included morning concerts for housewives at 11 AM, startingo n2 005. Furthermore, the Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra Chorus planned a religious music series, performing Bach¡¯s Matthaus-Passion in 2006 and Johannes-Passionin 2007, with more plans for the future.
The Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra Chorus changed its name through reorganization at the Bucheon Civic Art Center in 2005. It focused on developing various programs with Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra, the leading domestic symphony orchestra, to create opportunities for new steps forward as the leading domestic symphony choir. This is an unprecedented effort in Korea, and will be a model for domestic orchestras and choirs.
Greeting the 21st century as a top-level domestic choir that is acknowledged by all, the Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra Chorus has invited world-famous conductors to serve as guest conductors, including Ludmilla Yermakova(Russia), William Dehning and Joseph Flummerfelt(US), and Martin Behrmann(Germany). These efforts have given the choir a global reputation, and it is reaching out towards the world with ceaseless efforts and innovative planning.
